Duck, Little Brother, Duck! / Malegoat - Split (2015)

So it goes, this is Portland, Oregon's math punks - Duck. Little Brother, Duck!'s swan song. Together with Tokyo's emotional young men group, Malegoat, DLBD! give us one last taste of their incredibly busy and intricate punk music. Calling back to their first album, Survival Is Not a Workout, DLBD! add on to their quick-hit "Tony West" here with "Tony West Pt. 2". It's a very solid finale to one of the most interesting bands I've ever had the pleasure of seeing perform live and support here online.

But, it's only the beginning on the split; after DLBD!'s bombastic last hurrah there is still Malegoat's side to be explored. Malegoat's emo flair is both reminiscent of the Kinsella-wave emo revival here in the states and of Japan's own emo scene including bands like Climb the Mind and Folio. Malegoat have also released a split with the Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate), a similar band making good modern day emo music.

Øjne / Rainmaker Split

Rainmaker / Øjne - Split (2015)

Milano's always fresh screamo outfit, Øjne have teamed up with another European screamo outfit, Rainmaker from Eslöv, Sweden to bring you a two song split. It might only be two tracks each, but this is some top-level Euro skramz.

Delos / Yusuke - Split (2013)

This is a sweet screamo/hardcore/emo violence split I've been holding on to featuring Delos from Bremen, Germany and Yusuke from Illinois, Untied States. Very scream-y, very messy.

Princess Reason - Princess Reason (2013)

Princess Reason is a lo-fi indie pop group from Echo Park, California. They sound like stuff you should play on cassette while you are in your room alone and not acting tough listening to tough people music. It's a real treat really. Fans of Coma Cinema, Spook Houses, Julia Brown, Pill Friends, and quite lo-fi will definitely get a kick out of this stuff if they aren't already.

Soda Bomb - The Future is Gonna Suck (2013)

Before 2013 ended, all I knew about Soda Bomb was that they have a cover of the King of the Hill theme song. Now it's 2014 and I still don't know much about these guys other than I went the whole year without checking to see if they had released anything new.. and they did. Good thing Broken World Media let me know, seeing as they released these guys mid-2013 release, The Future is Gonna Suck last October.


Soda Bomb play fuzzy garage punk rock. Bring back the Attitude Era thumbs up if you agree.

Wood Burning Cat are a three-man power pop band. I guess that means they are Weezer, right?

Whatever it is, it's pretty fun and even includes some upbeat keyboard action. 

Karate Trophies was recorded via Mike Cunnane's Cut The Shit mobile recording studio.

Milo AKA Rory Ferreria takes Baths AKA Will Wiesenfeld instrumentals and puts obscure references on top of them.

Hopefully if I talk about him enough I can get a Nostalgia For Tomorrow pop some day. 

Really digging the last track, "The Mumblings of Mr. Wav". I had never heard Baths "Seaside Town" before this and nearly jumped out of my seat when I first heard those Kiki's Delivery Service samples. I'm a real softy for Hayao Miyazaki flicks...

Mr. NEET/Conjjjecture - Day of Caring Split (2013)

This split features two of Portland's own experimenting with electronics and drum machines, Mr. NEET and Conjjjecture. The two respective bands have a song to share on the split, including a new recording of "Only Rabbits", and one collaborative among friends and former band mates. The recordings were done by Mike Cunnane at Cut the Shit Recordings and featured everyone from the Portland post-whatever rock legends, Huak.



Also be on the lookout for Conjjjectures new album, Living For Dead Labor.

NFT's Got You Covered with the Cover of the Year

There was a few good covers to choose from this year but this one definitely stands out as numero uno...

That means number one.

Deafheaven - Punk Rock/Cody (Mogwai cover) (2012)

This intense cover of two songs originally by Mogwai from their album, 'Come On Die Young' comes from Deafheaven's 12'' split with Bosse-de-Nage. While the "Punk Rock" (the intro), and "Cody" are two different tracks on Mogwai's 2006 release, Deafheaven has combined them into one big post black post metal post rock track.

Deafheaven also mix things up with their choice of a spoken word sample for "Punk Rock". While Mogwai's original featured Iggy Pop discussing punk rock no less, Deafheaven's rendition features the words of William Faulkner (talking about fear I'm guessing) followed by some atmospheric black metal piano!

Both Deafheaven and Bosse-de-Nage are from the "Bay Area" (San Francisco, California). They both play a unique blend of black metal without being from Norway or looking the part. Some like to call that hipster black metal.

Iron Chic - Demo (2008)

Iron Chic is a pop punk out of New York that features members from other familiar names in underground pop punk like Small Arms Dealer, Latterman, Jonesin', Get Bent, and Capital.

The track, "Timecop" features vox by Matt Canino of RVIVR/ex-Latterman/ex-Shorebirds. Yes, Timecop as in the Van Damme movie, Timecop.

Adult Braces - Demo (2012)

Adult Braces is Pat Graham from the Blink 182 for white people pop punk outfit, Spraynard. Adult Braces is also essentially Spray (that's short for Spraynard) all stripped down and personal-like, which is super cool as I've become quite a fan of Graham's band lately and hearing this 'acoustic spin on things' is really nice. There's also a shout out to The Adventures of Pete & Pete in the second track, "Younger Games" which is really really nice (out of context, of course - listen and you'll know what I mean).

innards/two knights - Split (2011)

Usually I like to save any good splits I find, which is not often enough these days, and place them in a big split post were they can sit next to a bunch of other splits and look pretty. Well, to be honest, I have this terrible feeling that I'm going to leave this one out. So I've decided to put it here instead as it is on my mind and won't go unnoticed.

These two bands, despite sharing the same record, are quite different I might add. While innards take on  the screamo and noise sound of things, Two Knights tackle the twinkly, obscure vocals side, and damn do they do a good job of it. Two Knights are just one of those bands that make sounding absolutely annoying and inaudible, well... super audible and catchy as shit. A very nice example of a two different tastes yet totally works kind of split we have right here.

It looks like this split might also be called, 'No Scum Allowed' from what I make out on the album art right there, but I'm not sure. Just thought I'd point that out... Not to insult your intelligence or eyesight or anything.

And So I Watch You From Afar - Gangs (2011)

I can't remember if I just put this album off by the Irish experimental post rock/math rockers, And So I Watch You From Afar last year or slept on it, and yes, I literally mean I slept through it. Not because it is boring or anything, it is far from it, it is just that most post rock albums I put on, I put on right as I'm going to bed. If I had slept through the album rather than listening to it a year later, I pretty much screwed myself over. The Irish know how to make some pretty interesting and technical instrumental music (e.g. Enemies, Adebisi Shank, Wiltz) and native's ASIWYFA gave it their all last year to prove they are one of the top players. The results came in and they ended up  creating a very exciting, original sounding record that is much more math rock than it is sleeper post rock. So yeah, don't sleep on this album.

Here's some splits.

Johnny Hobo And The Freight Trains + MANTITS - Love Songs For The Apocalypse (2005)

Features Pat the Bunny and his gang, their best rendition of DIY Orgasm, a bunch of political songs about war, freedom, and elections, The New Mexico song, and a fairly unknown acoustic folk musician who went by MANTITS at the time.

The track, "kicking your shins" by MANTITS is a pretty messed up but with a meaning behind it  kind of tune and is definitely another highlight from this DIY folk the police, punk the cops split of a better time.

Actually now that I think of it, most of MANTITS' songs are all very much sarcastic pokes at the government and depict some pretty gruesome realist thoughts. Just listen and you'll get the picture.

Throats + Maths - Split (2008)

All around bitter hardcore in this one. The first time I heard this I had to stop after the Maths side because it packed so much of a punch. It's one of those albums that just doesn't quit and why should it?

Throats leaves no room to breathe on their side (while Maths actually has a song just for that called "Breathe As If It Were a Story"). Just constant hardcore through and through on these guys's part. No melodies, no apologies.

If you want a good example of two highly driven and way past just sounding pissed off bands from the UK...

Rumor has it Daitro is back from hiatus.

As the Maths/Throats Split was a good example of some of the best emotionally heavy bands from The United Kingdom, this split is probably the most honest example of the two best French screamo bands ever. Jamais!

Chalk Talk / Sirs - BVVVVVVV (2011)

This one probably deserves its very own post, but hey! Here at NFT, we save the best for last!

While I can't speak too much on behalf of the Sirs side of things (not that that's a bad thing. It's still jammin'), I can say that the two tracks by Chalk Talk are nothing we haven't heard before and trust me, we've all heard the Beach Boys summer jingle, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" before. But this split features a different version of "Misquamicut Has Bigger Waves Though", the song that got me hooked on these guys a year or so ago. And for that Beach Boys track that they have now made their own, which you may have already heard from the Biff Swenson cover compilation, 'Cover Up' that I addressed a few months back, it clearly shows that these Western Mass boys are no where close to California. Capisce?

I hope you are ready for all the cool new stuff coming out by both of these solid bands this summer! This is exciting!

NFT's Got You Covered! With Vestiges & Caulfield

Vestiges / Caulfield - Split (2012)

This little split featuring the metallic hardcore bands Vestiges and Caulfield is just a little taste of what my forthcoming NFT's Got You Covered! post will be about. I'm having a hard time finishing it up though because of the great size of this certain thing.

For now though, this is Vestiges and Caulfield's 2012 split featuring two whole tracks. Both tracks though are covers and both tracks stomp mud-holes in the original piece by its respected artist. The respected artists at hand are The Cranberries and Nirvana. That being said, it is quite a treat to hear such a lovely little 90's throwback like "Zombie" turned into what sounds more like a Goldar from The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers black metal tribute band. Caulfield's "Dive" by Nirvana interpretation is a little more straight forward in that it is just straight-up sludging on Cobain's little forgettable number which one may argue isn't even a cover anymore but just another song with the same name. I'm pretty sure it's a cover though.

Being a fan of "Zombie" by The Cranberries already, it was pretty obvious from when I noticed the cover that I would love it, especially since last year I was tricked by Andrew Jackson Jihad's track "Zombie By The Cranberries By Andrew Jackson Jihad" that wasn't a cover of "Zombie" at all. The split itself is only two tracks with a combined weight of 12 minutes, 6 minutes tops for both bands to butcher their track of choice. I don't mean that in a Tori Amos butchers every song she has ever covered sense but in a double homicide but got away with and looked like a hero ten years later kind of deal. Anyways, enjoy and stay tuned for what's to come.

Paul Baribeau Part 3

I couldn't resist talking more about Paul Baribeau and the show on Monday. So here's the rest of Paul's work that I have (or know).

Yikes Baribeau (2005)

I meant to ask Paul about "Yikes Baribeau" but the more and more I think about it now, the weirder and ruder it would have been if I just went up to him and started asking him about his work rather then saying how cool it was that he was here and such.

At first I thought Yikes Baribeau was a collaboration of Paul and the San Francisco noise rock band Yikes. While this is a full band and much punkier Paul Baribeau, it doesn't seem to actually have anything to do with "Yikes". Turns out that this is actually pre-Paul Baribeau Paul Baribeau before he stuck with an acoustic guitar and really opening up for all of us.

Yikes Baribeau does feature the precursors to the tracks "I Miss That Band", "Brown Brown Brown", "Strawberry", and "When You Go Back To College". They are the same tracks we have all become familiar with and grown to love but with electricity and a more punk'd up approach. I'm not sure who the other musicians are in the band or the ladies voice on a few of the tracks is. If anyone knows, lemme know too.

Demo Tape (2009)

Demo Tape was just an unreleased Paul tape that washed up on the internets in 2009 and featured mostly tracks that went on to be in Unbearable. The only track not on Unbearable is "Sand Dollar" and the track "Through the Wall" is just "The Wall".

Paul actually played most of these songs on the Demo Tape for the show monday night, which was awesome even if not as many people knew them as much as "Brown Brown Brown" or "Ten Things" . That's nothing new though...

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that once in a while on this demo there is a narrator type male voice that comes in during some of the tracks like "Sand Dollar". Maybe it was just on "Sand Dollar"... I can't remember.

Splits:

Ghost Mice/Paul Baribeau (2005)

I don't have the artwork but I do know the tracks for the Ghost Mice/Paul Baribeau Tour CD-R split. It features Paul Baribeau covering Ghost Mice and Ghost Mice covering Paul Baribeau. For the Ghost Mice side we hear Chris Clavin and the gang's renditions of  "Tablecloth", "Boys Like Me", and "Never Get to Know". On the other side, we hear Paul's renditions of "The Good Life", "Dead Flowers and Dirt", and "Ghost Mice Says" (also 'released' on 25).

The covers are pretty sick, obviously. Even Ghost Mice's cover of "Never Get to Know", a track that can really only be sung by Paul and Paul alone (like he wanted at the show), is still really fun to listen to even if it doesn't capture the emotion that Paul puts behind it.

Maybe I'll re-post this one sometime in the future with a further review for NFT's Got You Covered! Until then though, you can get fully acquainted with it by checking it out above!

Your Heart Breaks/Paul Baribeau Split (2009)

Features "Torrey Pines" by Your Heart Breaks w/Kimya Dawson whose track "Tire Swing" cleverly featured and gave a shot out to Pauly B.

Paul Baribeau's 7" split with Your Heart Breaks comes with some bonus tracks by YHB if you buy it from them. I don't have a linky for the tracks but you can grab the 7incher at YHB's store for a DIY punk price of 5 bucks, here. Paul's side of this split includes a different version of "The Rolling Clouds" (says it's "The Rolling Hills" on that site but I've only heard it as "clouds") from Unbearable.
