Bushido Dragons

Bushido Dragons - Bushido Dragons (1999)

Before Paul Baribeau was touring the underground punk rock scene with his simple yet additive acoustic music, the Grand Ledge, Michigan native played in a little band called Bushido Dragons. Bushido Dragons played a popular type of music for the locals at Grand Ledge High at the time... that type of music being surf rock.

The Bushido Dragons may have grown tired of playing surf rock, but the outcome of high schoolers recording their own DIY surf music turned into a super cool lo-fi sound that could have easily caught on today in this "everything is a throwback" society. Bushido Dragons' first self-titled record was by far the best example of this lo-fi surf rock style, while their follow-up release, Grand Haven, is much more of full-band version of Paul Baribeau's solo career. Grand Haven is no doubt a prequel to Baribeau's Grand Ledge released in '07. Hell, Grand Haven even includes the original version of "Blue Eyes" later on Baribeau's first self-titled release.

Check out all of the music Bushido Dragons ever recorded including their surf opera self-title at CometKaze.com. If you are a Paul Baribeau fan or just wanna hear some rare lo-fi music, you can dig deeper down into the Baribeau rabbit-hole with his even earlier band, Birthday Cakes also available on the site. If that's too rough for you, the recordings I mean, maybe stick with the live recordings of Bushido Dragons which include very early versions of Paul Baribeau singing Bruce Springsteen tracks.

Ted Nguyent - Don't Vote

Ted Nguyent - Don't Vote (2014)

Philly punks, Ted Nguyent got this whole punk rock thing figured out.

From their pizza-themed magnum opus, Pizza & Regret, Ted Nguyent have know moved on to much more thought-provoking themes such as biology, stalking, why Dave (Grohl?) killed Kurt Cobain, the Philadelphia Parking Authority, and, of course, the Temple of Doom and what it would feel like if it was their body.

Monday LXXXI

Part 1

Piles and Piles - Premonitions Say (2013)

Mathgaze if mathgaze was really a thing, I guess. Twinkly, laid-back vocals, and lengthy jams.

Piles and Piles are not to be confused with Pile, who are also from Mass.

Two Hand Fools - Two Hand Fools (2013)

Two Hand Fools are a noisy pop punk band from Cleveland, Ohio. They also must be Tim & Eric fans as the first track off their new self-titled album is not just "Spaghetti", but "Spaghet"!

Spooked ya!

Boyfrndz

Boyfrndz - All Day Pass (2012)

Boyfrndz are a shoegaze-y meets math rock act reminiscent of Caddywhompus, Pterodactyl, and modern day Tera Melos. They are not Japanese.

They are also a three piece from Austin, Texas that mixes a nice layer of noise on top of their pounding drums and distorted chords. The result isn't explosive or ridiculously noisy, but rather a nice thick sounding mixture that would go great on a cake or some sort of juicy pasta.

That's right, I said it; it would go great with cake or pasta.

This is Boyfrndz most recent album entitled, All Day Pass released last September.

Highlights: "All Day Pass", "Not That Sensitive", "Moses Jones", "Surfs Up", and "Closer".

Band members of Boyfrndz are also in these bands: East Cameron Folkcore, Tornahdo, Feuding Fathers, Bridge Farmers, and We The Granada.

Pachangacha + That Time of the Season?

It seems like it was just one week ago that my town was getting pounded in the face by that white stuff that we have all grown to love. Fast forward this week though, and we see people in short shorts and flip-flops. I must have slept on the weather report that announced it was going to be summer yesterday because it seemed as though a bit of blue skies and sunny weather caused everybody to remember how cool it is to not wear pants and heavy snow jackets. I think they also may have forgotten that there's that little teaser season before winter we get here in Maine called spring, a very muddy and rainy season that seems to last a second but feels like winter's mean but cool big brother. I'm not going to lie that yesterday wasn't a record high for March 8th, it was (I read it in The Portland Daily Sun)! And it was a whole 60 degrees too, oh my! But anyways, if you are that kind of person who automatically jumps in to summer mode when you see a warm day ahead these days, this post, and others on the horizon, are totally for you!

Pachangacha - Berserkabunga (2011)

Pachangacha sport a very clever punk sound that deals with many things such as not living in California, being in college, being a dweeb (a word I use quite often ever since this release), frats, and other things that we all have to deal with. Pachangacha themselves are made of members of another clever punk band,  Chalk Talk as well as some other dudes.

The album has a very summery feel to it, maybe because I listened to it a lot before and during summer last year and probably again this year, but a summer feel to it no less. It'll get you right in the mood to start thinking about the beach and riding bikes. Just turn this bad boy up and pretend you are in your swimming pool eating ice cream while watching the snow melt... or you could actually put swim trunks on and go outside and do it for real. To each their own.

These guys are "Kind of like if Weezer kept playing music from their Blue Album, up'ed the punx, and didn't suck now" (Last.fm)

Monday XXIII

Happy Monday and happy Dead Prez day, everybody.

High Pop - Hippie Speed Ball (2011)

More like High Poop.

Lo-fi garage surf rock stuff. Like it was recorded in a high school gym. Very fuzzy...

Nails - Unsilent Death (2010)

Heavy and quick hardcore that people like to make up genres for.

Perfect for listening to while finishing off a bowl of nails for breakfast to get your day going.

Unsilent Death (the song) gets me so fired up! Ungodly riffage galore!

Glue! - Glue! (2009)

Glue! is/was a punk band that features Erica Feas of RVIVR and Hooky. Glue! is much more straight forward punk than her other bands and her custom scratchy vox are less clean and harder to understand. Still a cool listen if you enjoy things associated with RVIVR, however and it's only four tracks...

Evian Christ - Kings And Them (2012)

Evian Christ (real name Joshua Leary) is a rising producer of some pretty dark hip hop beats. He started off posting his stuff on the Youtubes (which he has since taken down) and is now on super hip label Tri-Angle Records. I usually don't like anything from a record label with acts that have triangles, crosses, a bunch of O's or boring music in them, not just because they look really pretentious, but because I don't really like boring music and don't have time to constantly try to get in to them because it's just not rewarding in the end. Evian Christ, though, caught my attention instantly with his eerie/cloudy soundscape, deep bass and sparse rapping (mostly sampled) that is right up my alley these days. It's simple but I really like it!

I've been seeing a little bit of hype for this guy and every time I do, I always seem to see a comment that reads something like, "why do people like this, it sounds like that other stuff?" and I can't seem to agree. I still find Evian Christ pretty different. He's no Clams Casino or Blue Sky Black Death but he surely makes music that I want to listen to...

So take that.

CHALK TALK

These bros are something else. They are super serious and chant (dual vox action) about everyday things like pissing in the bath, the ageless question of peanut butter or Nutella, how their sister is dry as wood(?), the great struggle of being horny and much much more. It's like a bro'd out Cap'n Jazz meets The Beach Boys or something that has to be described I guess. There's really not a lot of bands that sound like Chalk Talk and must of the bands they are compared with sound like other bands, so yeah. They have found a nice bro punkx69 (I like to call it) sound. It's mega rad and every line is begging to be shouted out the window of your lame-ass honda car of choice after a long day at the office. Had a rough day at school or got dumped? that sucks. Chalk Talk could surely get you through the weekend though. There music will pat you on the back then push you over just to see you cry.

Chalk Talk - Killing Spree (2009)

This is their first Demo, Killing Spree. A very interesting listen. There's smashing, there's crashing, there's chanting, there's angst, there's confusion, there's ooh's and aaah's, and there's you and your amused ears.

Here's an example. For your health.

Similar acts/sounds: Algernon Cadwallader, Sirs, Pachangacha, Black Churches, Kickball, Hot Mess and a few others.
