Getting there.

Atalanta - Tainted (2013)

Very passionate and soul-gripping screamo. From the streets of Chicago and beyond.

Almost a little sludgy even.

Future Death - Future Death (2013)

Future Death is my answer to a new Zach Hill project minus Zach Hill. With spastic drums, blazing guitar riffs and  distorted female vocals, Future Death are mashing all sorts of sounds together and making it work. It's awesome!

For fans of Hella, Marnie Stern, Lightning Bolt, Caddywhompus, or Tera Melos.

CUSS - Heavenly (2013)

Incredible new release from Jesus Lizard-like Portland, Maine noise rock outfit, CUSS. Heavenly is a bit more refined than their previous releases recording-wise as well as musically-wise now that they have An Anderson guitarist, Dan Smith on beautiful Slint guitar duty to add a little melody to the madness. Since I'm a better listener than a writer I would definitely recommend checking out the review of Heavenly in the Portland Press Herald with some kind words and an appropriate star rating (pronounced stah ratin', of course) for a local news paper judging a "noise rock" band. Just check it out.

Also, CUSS are playing a show real soon at Matthew's in Portland, but Alex their singer won't be there. They're still going to be playing but ask that if anyone wants to sing their songs step up and sing along with them.

Crywank - Tour Demos (2013)

At the beginning of the year, James "Crywank" Clayton released these demos for his January tour. The tour may be over but the demos are still really nice, including some solid rerecordings, and all the cash brought in from the demo goes to more touring and more music recording. Also, this demo features the new member providing percussion to the Crywank sound, Dan "The Snail" Watson.

If anything, you should at least listen to this.

Wiltz - Sea Dog (2013)

Irish instrumental math rock outfit, Wiltz have recently decided to call it quits. It's always a shame to check up on a band you haven't heard in a while and discover they are done making music together.

At least they left us with good music.

You can pick up Wiltz's last album, entitled, Sea Dog over on their bandcamp or from Little League Records - who have been releasing all sorts of unique music from bands left and right as of late.

Radiator Hospital - Something Wild (2013)

Radiator Hospital play quirky lo-fi indie pop for the young people... whether you're young or you're not. It's the kind of music that you listen to and remember that not everything needs to be taken seriously or make sense.

This is their summer release, Something Wild.

Soft Skills - A Future to Remember (2013)

Soft Skills (always thought they were called "Soft Skulls") are an emo/math rock band from Portland, Oregon.

Very reminiscent of early emo bands mixed with the driving instrumentation of another Portland band, Duck. Little Brother, Duck! But I guess that shouldn't be such a surprise considering Kyle and Phil from DLBD! are also keeping time in this band. So yeah, that's pretty sweet as well.

These guys should not be confused with the Indiana band of the same name.

So Stressed - Attracted To Open Mouths (2012)

Stomping noise rock one minute, emo punk the next. Sacramento's own, So Stressed and their indecisiveness for what kind of music to make might actually be their greatest strong point. Whatever they play next, it will probably be loud, noisy, and totally new.

Attracted To Open Mouth is one of the freshest and most interesting albums I've come across in some time. Every song takes you on its own little journey through unknown landscapes and bizarre realms without ever explaining itself or bringing you back to where you started; it's a wonderful mess.

The only problem is it leaves you wanting more...

Definitely check this out. Trust me.

The Reptilian - Low Health

The Reptilian - Low Health (2013)

The Reptilian are a 3-piece from Kalamazoo, Michigan, a made-up sounding town for made-up sounding music genres. That being said, The Reptilian specialize in the art of math-y, twinkly emo - a complex way of saying they play very technical, noisy, and passionate music all at once... at least that's what I hear.

Low Health is their new full-length and a follow-up to their excellent 2010 release, Full Health. It definitely makes my list for must-hear music of 2013 if I had one, no doubt.

Highlights: "PAN (Sucks)", "Chimney Wizard", "San Haircut", "Keif Puck", and "Dk Mode". It's all good though.

Similar sounds/acts: Native, Kidcrash, Jowls, Toasted Plastic, Grown Ups, Innards, Victor! Fix the Sun, Boyfriends, 1994!, and other good stuff.

NFT Classic: Fiasco

Fiasco - Native Canadians (2008)

Fiasco were a young and noisy math punk-like three-piece that recently called it quits without my knowledge.

In honor of my rediscovery of this gem that I found on Myspace five years ago, I decided to do some research on Fiasco. Turns out these guys had a little bit more of cult following in New York than I had previously known. Maybe it had to do with the fact that one of the members of Fiasco was the offspring of Steve Buscemi...

Lucian Buscemi.

The one in the middle.

Similar sounds/acts: Steve Buscemi, Hella, Tera Melos, Good Citizens, Lightning Bolt, The Homosexuals, Fugazi, Minor Threat, and other math rock but not bands.

Bonus:

Fiasco - God Loves Fiasco (2007)

Boyfrndz

Boyfrndz - All Day Pass (2012)

Boyfrndz are a shoegaze-y meets math rock act reminiscent of Caddywhompus, Pterodactyl, and modern day Tera Melos. They are not Japanese.

They are also a three piece from Austin, Texas that mixes a nice layer of noise on top of their pounding drums and distorted chords. The result isn't explosive or ridiculously noisy, but rather a nice thick sounding mixture that would go great on a cake or some sort of juicy pasta.

That's right, I said it; it would go great with cake or pasta.

This is Boyfrndz most recent album entitled, All Day Pass released last September.

Highlights: "All Day Pass", "Not That Sensitive", "Moses Jones", "Surfs Up", and "Closer".

Band members of Boyfrndz are also in these bands: East Cameron Folkcore, Tornahdo, Feuding Fathers, Bridge Farmers, and We The Granada.

Safe will be playing with groovestep Portland acts, Glass Fingers, Altered Gee, and Conjjjecture at the Darkmouth Castle on the 19th (house on Dartmouth Street in Portland. Just follow the noise).

Rumor has it that this will be Glass Fingers' last performance as Glass Fingers. I don't know what this means but most likely will lead to more surprises ahead.

Happy Birthday Maine!

In honor of the grand ol' state of Maine for turning the big 193 today, I've decided to pull out some classic local albums that I used to listen to a lot (or at least that I have forgotten about until now).

Also, thank you, Maine for not splitting up into two separate states yet. Remember when that was a concern...

Confusatron - Chewbacalypse Now (2003)

Before ever hearing Hella's Hold Your Horse Is or had ever heard of such things as "math rock", "post rock", "jazz metal", "jazz punk" or any combination of those sub-sub-genres, I had only really heard of Confusatron.

I didn't know what they were, but I remembered their name from hearing it on a local radio station (it was WCYY, clearly) and would play all the music they had on their Myspace just because I loved the name (and the name of the album). And could you blame me? I was still playing with action figures when I heard about these guys, of course I was going to listen to them!

Taking a look back on this album today and I'm actually surprised how much I still enjoy it and how much it can stands up with a lot of other stuff I listen to these days. I mean it's got a mix of punk/metal and jazz, random samples, and random time-signatures - that's more than enough for me to get behind!

Through the discovery of Confusatron back in the day, I also came across a compilation by Entertainment Experiment which featured these guys along with other local bands like Pigboat, Man-Witch, Ghosthunter, and a hand full of others that I have lost track of. Confusatron had a few songs featured on the compilation (released in 2010) including the track "In The Shadow Of The Living Room" which was probably the first "post rock/metal" song I've ever heard and I didn't even know it (though it is also a mix of a bunch of other genres as well). "In The Shadow Of The Living Room" later appeared on Confusatron's 2010 release, Control Alt Destroy.

Covered in Bees - 24 Hour Album (2008)

Another band that was featured in the aforementioned compilation above was this kooky band. By the time the compilation came out though, I was already pretty familiar with Covered in Bees. So familiar in fact that at the time they released this album, which I will go into more detail about, I would have probably named it my favorite album of 2008.

Now why is this album called the 24 Hour Album? Because it's just that. It is an album that was written and recorded - conceived and birthed - in one day. And that was a really really cool thing to me when I first heard of it (once again, on the radio).

With the task of creating a whole album in 24 hours, Covered in Bees did not take their job too seriously and ended up with basically an album filled with random skits, quick quirky songs, genre-bending experiments, and even a song about Hobbits. But I loved it! And hell, I'll still come back to this goofy album from time to time just to get my nostalgia fix.

Covered in Bees called it quits a few years after this album was released but are back now and even playing some shows in the Portland area real soon. This is the part where I would like to tell you they are playing with Andrew WK next month (I know right!!!), but unfortunately that is not the case. Truly a shame, indeed.

Last Chance To Reason - Lvl. 1 (2007)

I have a theory in life that every genre of music on this planet has a good interpretation of what the genre should be and what it shouldn't. A common example of this would easily be genres like "screamo", a term most used when someone hears music with screaming in it versus "real" screamo which is a mix of emotional hardcore and "real" "emo". Bands like Poison the Well, Alexisonfire, Hawthorne Heights versus bands like Pg.99, Neil Perry, and Orchid. I don't mean to alienate anyone, but hopefully you know which ones are the "good" interpretation (or the "real" thing in this case).

What does this have to do with Last Chance To Reason,  a technical metal band from Augusta, Maine? Because LCTR has been the only band I know to be a good interpretation of technical progressive metalcore.

When I first heard these guys in 2007 or 2008, I hadn't listened to a lot of metal, but I had heard a lot of "metal" that I didn't like. LCTR though, had a lot of things going for them that were sort of like the "grindcore", "death metal", "progressive metal" bands that I had heard of and didn't enjoy, but something about the way that LCTR did it, it just made sense and I could actually listen to it without cringing. You know, that cringing feeling you get when your friends put on a Suicide Silence album to honor their fallen hero, well, LCTR didn't do that to me. Instead, I would just listen to these guys rather than force myself to get into over bands that these guys were opening up for like Unearth, Faceless, Job for a Cowboy, and Dying Fetus.

Anyways, Lvl. 1 is still an album I listen to once and a while when I'm feeling down about not forcing enough metal into my eardrums. It's not as popular as their second release, Level 2, which features a bit more of their love for electronics, softer singing vocals, and gaming - including a video game that actually goes with the album! I'm not sure how many other bands can say that they created a video game to go with their album, so that's pretty metal all by itself.

As far as I know, Last Chance To Reason are still out there somewhere getting awesome and playing video game infused technical metal! Unreal.

PS: Supposedly LCTR are also featured in a documentary called, Why You Do This - but I have yet to watch it.

Captain Hollow's Greatest Hits

Captain Hollow - Greatest Hits (2013)

When news first broke out on the internet that Captain Hollow were supposedly releasing their long-overdue debut album that has been in the works for at least 100 Maine band years, I was pretty pumped like the rest of you. But upon hearing the name of the new album, I initially snickered to myself saying, "laugh out loud, they are calling it Greatest Hits". I didn't laugh because I thought it was funny that they named what we all thought was going to be their first full-length release, Greatest Hits, I laughed because that is exactly what I wanted to call my first album when I was a youngster with a big dream of becoming a famous rock star. Despite my parents who tried so hard to keep me away from the rock star lifestyle seeing as they decided to name me Keith Thomas rather than Keith Richards, it was still my dream and prime focus for at least most of primary school.

But I digress.

Now that the album is out and about on the internet though, I can see why they named it Greatest Hits, and it's not because they read my inner monologue either. As a first-time listener to Captain Hollow, you may not see anything out of the ordinary about this album since everything is new to you anyways, but for someone who has been following these guys for too long now like myself, it is pretty clear what's up; this album is really Captain Hollow's greatest hits. The bulk of this album contains the innards of their first EP released a few years back ("Big Eyes", "Chewelah", and "The Bitter Tea of Yen") and one from their 2011 Tour EP ("Hour of Need"), plus a few previously unrecorded tracks, and a pretty much new to my ears at least track and single, "Blurry". And there you have it! The best hits of Captain Hollow all rolled into one eight song album for your listening pleasure, absolutely free while supplies last!

What's wrong with having a greatest hits album at this point, anyway? Adele already has at least 4 greatest hits albums and she's only been around since 2010 when Jack Penate donned a fat lady suit to get more attention in the US...

Who's Jack Penate?

Exactly.

Highlights: Every song is a highlight at 8 tracks. The new ones, "Meow Meow" (yep, they named their song that), "(All Fucked Up) Together", and "Stephanie Cornwitch"

Anyways, I guess that'a all I have to say about Greatest Hits. Was I hoping for more new tracks? Of course, but Captain Hollow just seem to be one of those bands you can't kill. They haven't gotten that Maine band memo that breaking up is way cooler than playing shows for maybe 50 people on a good night. Cappy Hollow will be coming out with a sequel to Greatest Hits five years from today; just you wait!

Thank You, Captain Hollow for never giving up! You were born and raised in a summer haze bound by the surprise of your glory. XOXOXOXOX

NFT's Got You Covered - RSO tackles Flippers' Generic Album!

RSO - Generic (2013)

Filthy blues crust, RSO takes on Flipper's punk rock essential, Album - Generic Flipper or just Generic.

I had the interesting pleasure of seeing RSO play a show in a dirty warehouse behind the train station about a half a year back and was very surprised to find that "RSO" was just one guy who stands on a platform, wails on his guitar, shouts bloody none sense, and stomps all the while wearing a tuxedo. I'm not sure if this is always RSO or the rest of the band just couldn't find the warehouse's coordinates but I thoroughly enjoyed his performance none the less... my girlfriend on the other hand, not so much.

Truthfully, this guy in the tuxedo and the uncontrollable erg to play blues and stomp as hard as he can is actually Ryan Owens, formerly of New Jersey but now residing in good ol' Maine.

RSO (I'm guessing those are his initials?)'s money rendition of Generic also comes with a double take of "Living For The Depression" and a few live renditions as well.

My only question now: where is "Sex Bomb"?

Correspondences - Christmas // Devil Town (2012)

Correspondences of Portland, Maine released this 7 1/2" at their farewell show back in November... Without me knowing, of course.

It's got two tracks, an original number called, "Christmas (Baby, Please Don't Go)" and "Devil Town" - a doom rendition of Daniel Johnston's haunting a capella about the struggles of living in a devil town with vampires as friends that you didn't know were vampires.

So yeah, it's pretty great!

I'm guessing this album is labeled Lee as in the drummer, Lee King. I'm almost positive it's all Correspondences, though.

Anyways, enjoy!

Music soup for the chicken soul.

Slim Charles - Versus Fatso Jr. (2011)

Cattle Drums post lots of interesting bands on their Facebook page.

This one is Slim Charles, a progressive/math rock/indie/"crunknasty" band from New York.

Props to Cattle Drums - a totally rad band as well (check 'em out if you haven't silly).

Pill Friends are a noisy, lo-fi garage rock/basement jingle band out of or around Philly.

I would describe them of a much more listenable Teen Suicide (since I'm just name dropping tonight rather than saying anything about the music).

Who wants to listen to teen suicide anyway? That's horrible.

Track 5 is a cover of Elvis Depressedly's "Mickey Yr a Fuck Up".

Really though, that's horrible.

Comadre - Comadre (2013)

Comadre are a hardcore punk from California. Even though I've been playing these guys since their split with Trainwreck from 2010 and they have released material since at least 2004, this is their first self-titled full length.

Maybe they are ready to sell out like Metallica did in 1991? Maybe they want to be Metallica?

They probably don't want to be Metallica.

Highlights include: "Cold Rain", "The Moon", "Drag Blood", "Date Night", and the other songs...

The Cold Rain single that goes along with this release is very good to my ears as well. It's also free...

Leaves Leaves - Tuna Boots (2012)

So good they named themselves twice.

Seriously though, this is another fresh face to the local music world of Portland, Maine. It seems just as one door closes on some of our favorite local acts (RIP: Red Medicine, Huak, and The Waldos soon), another one opens (hello: Conjjjecture, An Anderson, Leaves Leaves).

I guess I can't complaining...

Anyways, Leaves Leaves play lo-fi punk-noise-rock-pop, or as they have cleverly labeled it as on Bandcamp, 'slouch rock'. I kind of actually like the sound of that. I might even use that again sometime.

This debut whatever, entitled, 'Tuna Boots' was mastered by Mike Cunnane at 131 Washington Ave. in Portland, Maine.

The Taxpayers - "God, Forgive These Bastards" Songs From The Forgotten Life of Henry Turner (2012)

This morning I was just browsing around the scary parts of the internet when I came across a discussion about the new Taxpayers album and why no one added it to their best of 2012 lists yet. Most people just responded with, "oops, I forgot about this album" and, well, I did too honestly. It's too late to take it back, though. Whether I was going to put this on my best of list this year or not, I still feel this album needs some more goddamned listeners! So listen!

Now!

Where a 'Rhythm in the Cages' was a crusty/folky punk mess and 'To Risk So Much for One Damn Meal' sounded just like a Jeff Rosenstock side project with horns gone right, "God, Forgive These Bastard" has some sort of no wave infused folk sound that is overwhelmingly addictive.

All of The Taxpayers' albums are different. Different in a good way of course. However, the forgotten '"God, Forgive These Bastards" Songs From The Forgotten Life of Henry Turner' is clearly becoming my favorite.

If you don't music, lose it!

Right?

Weak Teeth - What a Plague You Are (2011)

Weak Teeth are a hardcore act out of Providence, Rhode Island. They seem to specialize in short, no longer than 3 minute, and intense tracks that any Loma Prieta or Touché Amoré enthusiast would appreciate. Weak Teeth do have a 9 minute track at the end of this album, 'What a Plague You Are' called, "Blue Skies, Shit Life" which can also keep my attention all the way through!

There is also a one song B-side to this album called, "Killers" and yes, it is a short one.

Necklacing - I (2012)

This little tape by a band from Massachusetts starts out like a chaotic mess that is kinda hard to put up to the eardrums at first, but as the whole thing starts unfolds and we cruise by track after quick track, the noise and violence that Necklacing ensues somewhat starts to make sense and by the last track locks in - enitiled, "Moira", we have ourselves a nastily fearsome closing piece. Without the last track, I probably wouldn't have taken notice of this tape. If you are a fan of powerviolence, fastcore, or just really noisy whatever we're calling punk music today, you may take a liking to all of this immediately. I dunno.

Conjjjecture - Fall 2012 Demos (2012)

Conjjjecture is the new band of Jacob Lowry, formerly of Huak (who recently called it quits. Sad, I know), along with other young local Portland natives (I can only guess). And while it's a shame to see such a talented band like Huak no longer around, this new local act "creating new sounds" is also a nice silver lining so to speak...

Currently, I have really taken a liking to the opening track of this demo called, "Only Rabbits" (which is the only song available to download currently). The song is actually an original creation of James Paul Cooper, the lead singer of Portland runk pock band, Heavy Breathing and what I believe to be as a sample of Charles Manson in there somewhere. I guess this conforms that Conjjecture is also Cooper's project and that it is not a Jesse Gertz AKA Glass Fingers project. Guess he's too busy with Heart Munny Son anyway...

CUSS - High Gravity (2012)

The up-and-coming noise-making all-stars, CUSS of Portland, Maine just released a new album entitled, 'High Gravity' through their new bandcamp page.

CUSS played-on Red Medicine this summer at the Red Med last hurrah show and, boy oh boy, was it a nice surprise. I mean, I was already interested in seeing these guys play after hearing their demo beforehand, but I didn't expect seeing what I did. Along with excellent drumming by Elijah and some of the best bass guitar I've seen and heard by Sean, there is Alexander. He's the guy on the ground. He was also the guy rolling on the ground, getting the mic cord twisted around everything he stumbled over, sweating profusely, and shouting inaudible nothingness at the show. It was great.

These guys should definitely be on your must-see list for local acts right now if you are a fan of Portland area music and like making lists.

Maybe that's just me...
