Bastro - Diablo Guapo

Bastro - Diablo Guapo (1989)

Bastro was a late 80's/early 90's post-hardcore band from the hot-spot for experimental hardcore music, Washington, DC. The band was started by David Grubbs who previously lived in another hot-spot for experimental hardcore music at the time, Louisville, Kentucky where he was the first singer and guitarist for Squirrel Bait. With Grubbs' experience and the eventual addition of John McEntire (a percussion major at the time) replacing a drum machine, Bastro became a somewhat short-lived but incredibly skilled hardcore band.

Bastro took their early post-hardcore sound and gave it a twist by adding piano and horns to create the sounds of their 1989 release, Diablo Guapo ~ Handsome Devil. Diablo Guapo today would probably be described more like noise rock or math rock with its many time signatures and twisted guitar sounds not always heard in punk music at the time. Back in '89 though, I would imagine they were considered more of hardcore band with too many ideas and not enough problems.

Similar sounds/acts: Squirrel Bait, early Slint, Bitch Magnet, Sweep the Leg Johnny, Rodan, Uzeda, Shellac, Tortoise, Evergreen, and all the other bands McEntire and Grubbs went on to create music in.

Heccra - Devil-Faces VCR Session (2014)

Some more stuff from the highly combustible, blow your speakers and eardrums out simultaneously, Heccra. From what I've gathered this is more of a rough draft to Heccra's full-length, entitled The Devil-Faces of My Old Friends, Beneath Me slated for release later this year. Until then though, here's some adulterated noise for your unpure soul.

Calculator - This Will Come to Pass

Calculator - This Will Come to Pass (2013)

Calculator should not be new to this site. Unfortunately, as I look back in the archives to no other post of Calculator other than a mention, this is the first time I've posted anything by this band. It's a shame really because these guys are pretty sweet and deserve some recognition. Well shame no more, here's some Calculator!

This Will Come to Pass is Calculator's 2013 release packed with some great post hardcore and emo that flows very nicely and in a not so overwhelming manor. Calculator vocal duty also relies more on shouting than it does screaming, which is why I wouldn't necessarily write these guys off as typical 'screamo'. Nevertheless this is some cool material, especially from the instrumental stand point of things.

Highlights: "Gasping, But Somehow Still Alive", "Becoming / Whisperings in Sleep", "Permanent State of Daylight", "Reverie", and "Last Breath".

Similar acts/sounds: Ten Thousand Leagues, tongue, Innards, Jowls, Beau Navire, The Reptilian, Caust, William Bonney, and other stuff, I guess.

Paul Newman and the Ride Home - (sic) (2013)

When someone thinks about ukuleles, they probably either think about fat guys singing about rainbows, Spongebob, or Tiny Tim (the one with the ukulele). I, on the other hand, am haunted by the thoughts of summer camps and horrible Youtube videos. Luckily, Paul Newman and the Ride Home are neither summer camps nor really bad Youtube videos. They do however have a ukulele... but I guess it can stay.

But really, Paul Newman and the Ride Home are a pop punk band from Baltimore that just so happen to also have a ukulele. It's an interesting listen, no doubt. Give it a try:

The Saddest Landscape - Exit Wounded (2013)

On a more serious note, Northeastern shouters, The Saddest Landscape got in a pretty rough accident while on tour last week. Apparently the tires on their van exploded causing them to crash. Luckily, no one was too injured in the accident but their van is totaled and the tour is pretty much ruined.

The Saddest Landscape play some really cool screamo/early emo-inspired music that I've been enjoying for sometime now. If you don't know these guys, I would ask that you give them a listen and support them. Their newest release, Exit Wounded is a 5 track EP filled with uncontrollable emotion and incredible instrumentation. I'm going to leave a link to sample the album but I highly recommend that if you like what you hear to support these guys. And by support I mean give them your money.

Be sure to also check out their little split with My Fictions which includes an incredible 13 plus minute emotional masterpiece of sorts (more on that later though).

Øjne

Øjne -  Undici/Dodici (2013)

Something about being from Europe always makes screamo sound that much more enjoyable. Øjne in particular are from the wonderfully non-English speaking country of Italy. Milan, Italy to be exact. I'm not sure if that makes the music even better as well, but it's definitely cool.

Øjne's sound here on Undici/Dodici is very reminiscent of early real screamo and other great screamo acts from Europe like Daitro and Sed Non Satiata, Raein, and La Quiete. That being said, those are some wicked bands to sound like if you are going to sound like anything relatively emotional and hardcore. These guys had me at Italian screamo. Seriously, that's all I really even need to say at this point.

Highlights: The whole shabang, but I'm digging the opener, "Glasgow" the most right now.

PS: Through my extensive research via Google translator, apparently "Øjne" means "eyes" in Danish. So, there's also that.

Phantom Glue - A War Of Light Comes

Phantom Glue - A War Of Light Comes (2013)

Here's some new-ish music from the Boston doomed sludge brigade, Phantom Glue.

I saw these guys a couple years back when there was a good number of metal shows at the Space Gallery in Portland. It was a hell of a show and these guys really bring the noise in the essence of powerful Neurosis-like sludge metal. Phantom Glue might not be playing in my neck of the woods anytime soon, at least not that I know of, but they are currently playing shows around New England and elsewhere with some very cool bands such as KYOTY, Pelican, Wreck & Reference, and Sannhet. So yeah, that's still pretty sweet.

I've been on a huge metal/heavy/intense music kick lately, especially doom-y sludgy sloppy stuff, and Phantom Glue provides me with all those wonderful things. This album is an incredible 7 track banger that I would easily put on my best of 2013 metal list if I had one, which I don't. Not yet, at least...

Highlights: All of it! Probably digging "Bow in the Dust" the most right now though.

Similar acts/sounds: Ramming Speed, Razormaze, Sylvia, WARANIMAL, Kowloon Walled City, Pyres, Neurosis, Black Tusk, Raise The Red Lantern, and other cool bands that don't sound like Phantom Glue.

The Sky Above and Earth Below - Parting Ways

The Sky Above and Earth Below - Parting Ways (2013)

Boy, it's been a while since I've heard a good screamo album. Lucky for me (and you!), Portland, Oregon post hardcore screamers, The Sky Above and Earth Below have just the album a true screamo fan has been missing in their life. The album might be called Parting Ways, but don't let that fool you into thinking that this isn't some high level screamo that's not played in the right musical direction it should be.

The Sky Above and Earth Below have completely stepped up their game on this new release from their previous release back in 2010 - Quest's Timescape - which was mostly written and recorded by guitar/vocalist, Miller Reda. Now The Sky Above and Earth Below are a full-time three piece, and while Quest's Timescape was a great release, I think Parting Ways might just blow it out of the water.

Nevertheless, both albums are still really great. Highly Recommended if you are into this sort of stuff!

Highlights: "We Scattered Ashes", "Even With This", "Now That You're Gone", "Like a Wisp Across a Hall", "We've Never Truly Parted Ways" (acoustic closer!).

Similar acts/sounds: Ten Thousand Leagues, Loma Prieta, мища, Beau Navire, Sloths, Cower, Carrion Springs, 2049, Raein, and other stuff.

Also, I'm not sure if this band still writes about The Legend of Zelda series. I guess it's okay if they don't, I was a bigger Mario Bros. fan growing up anyways.

Captain Hollow's Greatest Hits

Captain Hollow - Greatest Hits (2013)

When news first broke out on the internet that Captain Hollow were supposedly releasing their long-overdue debut album that has been in the works for at least 100 Maine band years, I was pretty pumped like the rest of you. But upon hearing the name of the new album, I initially snickered to myself saying, "laugh out loud, they are calling it Greatest Hits". I didn't laugh because I thought it was funny that they named what we all thought was going to be their first full-length release, Greatest Hits, I laughed because that is exactly what I wanted to call my first album when I was a youngster with a big dream of becoming a famous rock star. Despite my parents who tried so hard to keep me away from the rock star lifestyle seeing as they decided to name me Keith Thomas rather than Keith Richards, it was still my dream and prime focus for at least most of primary school.

But I digress.

Now that the album is out and about on the internet though, I can see why they named it Greatest Hits, and it's not because they read my inner monologue either. As a first-time listener to Captain Hollow, you may not see anything out of the ordinary about this album since everything is new to you anyways, but for someone who has been following these guys for too long now like myself, it is pretty clear what's up; this album is really Captain Hollow's greatest hits. The bulk of this album contains the innards of their first EP released a few years back ("Big Eyes", "Chewelah", and "The Bitter Tea of Yen") and one from their 2011 Tour EP ("Hour of Need"), plus a few previously unrecorded tracks, and a pretty much new to my ears at least track and single, "Blurry". And there you have it! The best hits of Captain Hollow all rolled into one eight song album for your listening pleasure, absolutely free while supplies last!

What's wrong with having a greatest hits album at this point, anyway? Adele already has at least 4 greatest hits albums and she's only been around since 2010 when Jack Penate donned a fat lady suit to get more attention in the US...

Who's Jack Penate?

Exactly.

Highlights: Every song is a highlight at 8 tracks. The new ones, "Meow Meow" (yep, they named their song that), "(All Fucked Up) Together", and "Stephanie Cornwitch"

Anyways, I guess that'a all I have to say about Greatest Hits. Was I hoping for more new tracks? Of course, but Captain Hollow just seem to be one of those bands you can't kill. They haven't gotten that Maine band memo that breaking up is way cooler than playing shows for maybe 50 people on a good night. Cappy Hollow will be coming out with a sequel to Greatest Hits five years from today; just you wait!

Thank You, Captain Hollow for never giving up! You were born and raised in a summer haze bound by the surprise of your glory. XOXOXOXOX

it.is.imperative are a German post hardcore/screamo band from Germany. I'm not too sure how I came across these guys a few years ago but for someone who hadn't listened to a lot of "real" screamo, I (none the less) enjoyed their sound right away. Monday XXXXIV

Just for fun.

Octaves - Greener Pastures (2010)

Octaves are a chaotic hardcore band from Baltimore that totally rip shit up. They were also the surprise band that played with Duck. Little Brother, Duck! last week. 'Surprise' because they weren't put on the bill and advertised and 'surprise' because once they got set up they just started going to town on their tracks and blasted some sweet and heavy hardcore music into my and all those there to witness's ears with no real warning or chit chat. No messing around. It was fast, it was intense, it got really intense, it was loud, and it was over just like that. They may have had the biggest and loudest amps I have ever seen in a little punk house basement. When congratulating these guys on a job well down after making my friend's ears bleed, they mentioned that, "this was the quietest we have ever played". Damn.

These guys have definitely done their homework on experimental and post, yesterday and today hardcore. Stay tuned for more of these guys to come as they got themselves a new one coming in the fall, supposedly!

Also: mad props to these guys for the Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! reference with, "Fix The Fern Back". If you don't know what I mean, check this out!

Lester Freamon - Natural Police (2011)

After the DLBD!/Octaves show (local math wizards The Waldos and local new doom, old faces Horace played them on) I picked up Duck. Little Brother, Duck!'s new album, 'Don't Take Our Filth Away' (which everyone should check out before I butcher it with a boring review) and with it I got a nice little sampler from Friends For Life Records that featured some, if not most, of what they've got to offer as far as bands go from their label. Along with familiar names like The Sky Above and Earth Below, Cower, DLBD!, The Caution Children, others that aren't, and Grandfather (the metalcore one); I also noticed that Lester Freamon was on it and remembered that I was going to write about them... I didn't but now I am. That is the card I'm playing.

Lester Freamon is a hardcore/punk/screamo band probably from Portland, Oregon. This is Natural Police, a four songer about killing cops and blowing things up. Maybe not but I like to think so. Their name and album name comes from the HBO series The Wire, based out of Baltimore, Maryland and the fictional character in it named, Lester Freamon. I've watched one episode of The Wire and he wasn't in it.

Harriet The Spy

Harriet The Spy was another one of those long since forgotten post hardcore acts that totally deserved a giant fan base or some kind of music cult following but was never the case unfortunately. Harriet The Spy was also another one of those bands that not only shares its name with some kind of TV/book/movie reference but the exact same name of one. Whether or not these guys took the name from Harriet the Spy the award winning children's book from the 60's or right from the Nickelodeon movie adaptation in 1996 starring Michelle Trachtenberg and the one and only Rosie O'Donnell - or even - weren't aware of such book and rather thought they were being clever history buffs and came up with Harriet The Spy after Harriet Tubman who just so happened to be a spy. Damn right she was...

But yeah... who knows which is true.

Harriet The Spy, the band, from Kent, Ohio and their only album released aside from some 7inches and splits, Unfuckwithable features noisy instrumentation and post punk, straight out of the 90's vocals (if that is even really a thing).

Harriet The Spy - Unfuckwithable (1997)

Similar acts/sounds: Plunger, Native Nod, Fugazi, Q And Not U, Mohinder, Still Life, Faraquet, Chokebore, Huak, Assfactor 4, Antioch Arrow, and... none of those acts.

Captain Hollow

Captain Hollow - Captain Hollow EP (2011)

Captain Hollow are a gang of kids from Bangor, Maine who have crafted their own little brand of "emotionally charged music" that is both rewarding and fun to listen to, especially live, and more than once. This home brewed concoction of early emo, post hardcore, and indie rock influenced music really makes these guys a very stand-out act in Maine and even New England as a whole. No good deeds should go unnoticed and these guys and their good deed of taking risks and playing some very unique and sometimes hit-and-miss noisy/melodic music will forever be on notice here for us to acknowledge.

Captain Hollow, a project that initially started in 2009, has had a few changes in their line-up since the original recording of this EP. Most of all who have appeared to be apart of CH at one time or another have also been associated with Orono, Maine bands like Good Kids Sprouting Horns, In Houses In Trees, Mt. Moon, and/or 1800s Sea Monsters. Jakob Battick, the designer of the artwork above, joined the band sometime after the release of this EP and has been a very instrumental player in the bands creative movement towards whats to come next for these guys and has also been quite vocal about kicking back and just playing in the background after a few years of respected solo and frontman duties.

All in all, these gentlemen are young and free. Living the American dream if you will. They play music that they like and the kids like. They should be playing it every night on a different old person's lawn until the cops catch 'em and give them free donuts. These guys and their new wave music deserves free donuts. Free donuts for life.

Similar acts/sounds: Good Kids Sprouting Horns, Mt. Moon, Jakob Battick & Friends, In House In Trees, 1800s Sea Monsters, Joseph Merrick, Horse Feathers, Braveshark, Red Medicine, To The Barricades and....

Bonus: A few months back, I was in Goodwill just looking at their records when I discovered a little gem called Danny Kaye For Children. I didn't buy it but I remembered it looked awfully familiar...

Houston We Have A Problem - Shipwreck

Houston We Have A Problem - Shipwreck (2006)

Houston We Have A Problem was the first ("real") "screamo" band I ever encountered and even though I would begin listening to this 2006 release, 'Shipwreck' mostly for the edgy post rock crescendos and texture it featured, I would eventually, over time, come back to it for the way that they blended the vocals and screaming into such an emotional atmosphere. Sometimes screaming is just another instrument, sometimes it's a cry for help. Houston We Have A Problem successfully used both to their advantage. And by successfully, I mean pretty freakin' well.

Apart from manipulating the post rock to screamo, slow to choatic approach like that of City of Caterpillar and/or Men of Trees, Houston We Have A Problem (especially on 'Shipwreck') used extensive samples (obviously a big interest of mine) that open the songs up like story books and accent their instrumental work that overlaps the words. And as the album name as well as the song titles "Poseidon, Angered", "Titanic, The First Victim", "Calm Seas Become the Squall", or "Valdez, Drunk Driving is Punishable on Water Also" suggest, this is a maritime themed (and maybe conceptive) release. That may not be as cool to you as it is to me but I live for this kind of stuff. It's in my blood.  The conversations and words that were sampled in this album, self-released by the way, don't seem like they are sea themed as the rest of the album tends to lead you on about, but are actually mostly from a movie called, 'The Legend of 1900' that not only deals with life at sea but also the music of the time after World War II. I have yet to see this film but from what I know about it, it sounds right up my alley.

Also, one of the coolest parts about the screaming that goes on in this album is that it isn't just one guy screaming his brains out non-stop, but the whole band, and with the whole band on vocal duties, it makes for quite the listen. Most notably due to all the different shrills and yelps that each member of this four piece brought to this recording... a recording that surely has some of the most original yelling I have ever heard, hands down.

Houston We Have A Problem has since broken up, but not without releasing three self produced albums (The Sky Did Not Crack and the Stars Did Not Fall, Punk is Dead, and Shipwreck). After calling it quits, some members went on to form Who Goes There? and the others went on to form Perfect Future. If you're liking what you are hearing from HWHAP, I definitely suggest you go check those bands out as well. There's not a lot of ways to listen to them but hey, this is 2012, kid... you'll figure it out.

Similar acts/sounds: City of Caterpillar, Gospel, Circle Takes the Square, Envy, Who Goes There?, Perfect Future, Men As Trees/Locktender, I Create, The Caution Children, We Were Skeletons, Lizards Have Personalities, and other bands not named Houston We Have A Problem.

"Take a piano. Keys begin, keys end. You know there are 88 of them. Nobody can tell you any different. They are not infinite. You are infinite...

BATS - Red in Tooth & Claw

BATS - Red in Tooth & Claw (2009)

BATS are another Irish math rock band. That's not all they sound like though. And what do they sound like? They sound like well, catchy dance math post-punk with post-hardcore influences alla These Arms Are Snakes or We Versus The Shark. But they don't really sound all too much like those guys either. Maybe it has to do with the unique vocal arrangement by the frontman's speek/shout mouth spasms. Whatever it is or whatever they sound like, it's pretty damn fun. Especially for, and not exclusive to, fans of math rock, heavy post-punk or post-hardcore.

Definite starters would have to be tracks 1 and 2. Once those are over listen to tracks 3 and 4, and then 5,6,7,8 and 9. After that you should probably keep listening on for track 10 and, well, track 11 since that's the last song. So yeah, listen to everything I guess.

Also: BATS is STAB spelled backwards.

Similar acts/sounds: These Arms Are Snakes, Adebisi Shank, Enemies, Time Columns, Q and Not U, Huak, A Voice Like Rhetoric, Faraquet and HORSE the Band. LOL jk.

I Hate Myself

I Hate Myself - 10 Songs (1997) (rereleased in 2000)

I Hate Myself were an emo band. They were not where emo (the phrase at least) that bled over into pop (mall) punk territory, sheltered itself in black clothes, and only aloud itself one eye to see out of. No, I Hate Myself is probably as real as it gets and more. Don't let the name fool you. I Hate Myself had the passion and emotion to convey true sadness to be ripped out of your body and then perfected the sing/scream technic that a thousand other bands that I want to throw broken pieces of their own tour vans' at them just butcher and make me cringe. Those other bands had no real emotion or message other than I hate myself and want to die. I Hate Myself said much more. Too much more.

If only IHM knew that being depressed and artsy could be so....

Well... Emo.

Similar artists: The Pine, Indian Summer, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, Kolya, You and I, and more post-hardcore type emo bands that don't suck and.. yeah that's it.

P.S. This albums called 10 songs but this one goes to 11!! Is that sick or what?!

Favorite track: "To a Husband at War"  the song that was originally on the band's 7'' split with Strikeforce Diablo but later added to 10 songs, thus giving the album 11 songs I believe. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Victor! Fix the Sun - Person Place or Thing (2009)

Person Place or Thing is Victor! Fix the Sun's follow up to their 2007 release, Retractable Claw. It was also their last.
